Our presenter would like to dissolve the misconceptions around language drilling and share effective drilling techniques for any lesson. First, he will clarify the meaning of drilling, sharing ineffective versus effective use of drilling. Then he will share two practical drilling activities for any lesson for practicing lexis, structures, dialogues, and freer practice.

The key points to be covered are:

• why drilling works,
• two examples each of:
  • lexical drills,
  • structure drills,
  • dialogue drills, and
  • freer practice drills.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Sam Burns is a passionate and critical independent ESL teacher trainer who focuses on getting results. Currently based in South Africa, he has been teaching EFL/ESL for eight years. Learning his fourth language, he understands the challenges of learners. Having experience in the free, public, and competitive ESL markets, he understands the challenges of teachers from many fields. As an American who acquired his TEFL in South Africa, married a South African non-native English teacher, started his career in China, and raises bilingual children, he now has a much more well-rounded perspective on culture and language learning.
