DESCRIPTION

How can outdoor education enhance English as a Second Language learning? How can inquiry-based learning within nature promote English language development? How does nature connection enhance community within a new homeland?

This webinar will teach ESL instructors how to incorporate nature-based programming into their language lessons. The goal is to inspire teachers to consider how learning about Canadian nature can enhance the newcomer and refugee experience and build connections with their new homeland. The presentation will discuss how to use an inquiry-based approach.

This webinar will explore:

• the history of the European Forest school model and how it promotes wonder, honor, and connection to the land.
• how the concepts of: access, place, relationship and connection can be integrated into ESL classrooms in order to allow for equitable and inclusive learning opportunities in the outdoors.
• the ways that newcomers can utilize nearby green spaces to build connections and community through observation and inquiry-based language skills.
• how newcomers can become more than tourists, but stewards of the environment.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Kaitlyn Quigley is a TESL Ontario/TESL Canada certified teacher. She currently teaches part-time LINC/ESL classes for Halton District School Board. She has been a Forest Teacher since September 2020 and owns an Incorporated Outdoor Childcare Program. She is passionate about nature-based education and how vital it is for newcomers to learn about the Canadian sights and sounds through vocabulary and conversation.
