TESL Ontario Webinar

Race and racism impact every aspect of our society. This includes the 'classroom' and education experiences. Noting this, many TESL instructors experience issues around class and culture. Often, the conversations around these intersections fail to address the way that they are both 'raced'. This means that ideas of class and culture are two aspects of life that are seen through an understanding of 'who' belongs to 'which' classes and 'what' cultures around the world are 'like' - through a lens of race.

Anti-racist theory acknowledges that racism is foundational to the development of our society. As such, to understand racism and anti-racist work we must address it at personal, ideological, and institutional levels. This is involved in the classroom and the conversations we do (or don't) have about race, class, racism, culture, and identity.

This webinar will explore themes of race and racism and provide some insights (which can be carried into the classroom) to understand how to approach conversations of race, racism, and anti-racism.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Kattawe lives and works on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. Working as the Human Rights and Anti-Racism Advisor at Brock University, Kattawe operates under an anti-racist, anti-oppression framework. She works to prevent and address harassment and discrimination in the Brock community.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Gender Studies and Feminist Research from McMaster University, Kattawe brings a background enriched with experiences and understandings of research and development, critical thought, and strong understandings of the importance of Human Rights and Equity work.
