What is horticultural therapy? Can your students benefit from horticultural therapy? How can you integrate horticultural therapy into your lesson planning? Perhaps these are questions you’ve never considered. If so, we encourage you to join us to learn more.

Horticultural therapy is defined as a “professionally conducted client-centred treatment modality that utilizes horticultural activities to meet specific therapeutic or rehabilitative goals of its participants”. Evidence-based research has proven that horticultural therapy’s benefits to individuals are wide-reaching, assisting in the well-being in the cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and physiological life areas.

Although a trained horticultural therapist works with clients in a variety of settings (hospitals, long-term care homes, prisons) there are aspects of the outcomes that can be included in classroom settings. You do not need to be a manic gardener to use plant-based material in your classroom.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Christina Klein has degrees in education, religion, and psychology, as well as certification in horticultural therapy. She is on the board of the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association, having held a variety of positions, including three years as the Chair. In her 28 years of teaching she has taught all levels of ESL, from literacy to LINC 7. She is a dedicated TESL Ontario volunteer, having been on the Windsor TESL Board for the past 10 years.
