How do English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs shape international student success in Canadian colleges and universities? Do students who complete EAP programs perform better academically than those who do not? How do outcomes such as Grade Point Average (GPA) and retention differ between students who complete EAP programs and those who do not?

This webinar will present findings from a multi-institutional study on the academic outcomes of international students who completed EAP programs at Canadian colleges and universities. Using institutional data from 2018–2023, the study compares GPA and retention rates between EAP and non-EAP students, highlighting the impact of EAP programs on academic success in Canadian post-secondary education.

Learning outcomes:

• to understand how EAP program participation relates to international students’ GPA and retention outcomes,
• to compare GPA and retention rates of international students who completed EAP with those who did not, and
• to reflect on the broader value of EAP programs in enhancing academic success in post-secondary education.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Danielle Freitas is the Associate Dean of the English Language Institute at Fanshawe College. She holds a Post-Doctorate in Leadership & Organizational Strategy from Walden University, and a PhD in Language & Literacies Education from the University of Toronto (OISE). Julian Inglis is the Associate Director of ESL at Brock University. He holds an MA in Linguistics from McGill University and a TESOL diploma from Vancouver Community College. Valerie Kilgour is the Director, Membership & Quality Assurance for Languages Canada. Chenxi He is a Senior Researcher at Academica Group. He holds a PhD in Psychology and has years of quantitative research experience in various academic and research settings.
